AnimAl joined forces with Animation Skillnet at Bow Street
The recent Skillnet event ‘Directing Animation for TV, Features and Shorts on the Friday 15th and Saturday 16th September was a major success.
Supported by ourselves in AnimAl - animation alliance, along with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland a big shout must go to Gareth Lee from Skillnet for organising this gathering of animators. Directors and animators interested in direction.
More than ninety people attended the first day to listen to three talks and two panel discussions.
Our members were well represented on the panels in the afternoon. Tomm Moore, Paul Bolger, Jamie Teehan all speaking Also a good number of our members were in the audience asking questions making comments…. or just listening.
From the talks in the morning and anecdotes from the afternoon panels it was obvious that directors in animation production have an enormous wealth of experience.
A common theme with the directors in the morning emphasised performance and characterisation. Researching performance, then acting it out before ‘shooting’ it.

A few words from Pete Docter on joining AnimAl:
It seemed to me, having listened a lot to live action directors in the past and comparing them to the animation speakers that Friday that there is a major difference between directors in both fields. That is that animation directors have a better relationship with producers, series producers and funders. Not that there aren’t problems and indeed disagreements but problems are resolved in a more pleasant atmosphere. Perhaps a simple reason for this is the production schedule in a live action shoot is more intense and so lends itself tenser decision making situations. Whereas the animation production pipeline allows for calmer situations.
An excellent discussion on the role of women generally in the industry wrapped up the first day. It was lively with some new takes on how things are changing for the better.
John Aoshima - Kubo and Two Strings - gave a masterclass on Saturday.
Overall the event had an element of the ‘historic’ about it. It was a first and it was very inspirational. We must do it again.
